For Other Researchers

The David Hide Asthma and Allergy Research Centre team has undertaken many research projects over the last 30 years. Key projects include:

  • Isle of Wight Birth cohort – a description of the cohort can be found here. The cohort has made a considerable contribution to our understanding of asthma and allergy
    across childhood and adulthood.
  • 3rd Generation Study – children of the 1989 Birth cohort are helping us to understand how asthma is inherited; an example publication is here.
  • Isle of Wight Allergy Prevention Trial – house dust mite avoidance and a low allergen diet led to significant reduction in asthma, eczema and allergy across childhood; latest findings can be found here.
  • Mite Allergen Prevention Study (MAPS) – in this pilot research, sublingual house dust mite drops significantly reduced the likelihood of developing asthma; latest findings here. We are now hoping to replicate these findings in the PAPA trial.
  • Food Allergy & Intolerance Research (FAIR) – a birth cohort was followed for a decade helping us to understand which infants develop food allergies, and how this changes over childhood. Latest findings here.
  • Pollen counting – we provide pollen counts for the MET Office using a spore trap on the roof of St Mary’s Hospital. We count the amount of Hazel, Willow, Birch, Ash, Elm, Beech, Oak, Plane, Grass, Nettle, Mugwort and Ragweed pollen in the air daily, between March and September.
